Proven program, faithfully implemented
Thinner Leaner Stronger
Thinner Leaner Stronger is Mike Matthews' framework written for women — the same double progression on a handful of big compounds as Bigger Leaner Stronger, with the accessory work and rep ranges pitched differently. It runs in multi-week phases and takes a scaled deload between them, roughly half the working reps rather than a full week off.

Who it's for
- Best for: Strength and shape together, with very few programming decisions to make.
- Experience: Beginner to intermediate. Matthews teaches the lifts in the book, and the working weight adjusts itself as you clear the rep ranges.
- Time: Multi-week phases with a deload between, three to five sessions a week.
How you can run it
Thinner Leaner Stronger runs three ways, and you pick which one when you start it — Iron Forge builds the sessions to match.

How Iron Forge runs it
How it works
Thinner Leaner Stronger (Mike Matthews) is the counterpart to Bigger Leaner Stronger, built around the same principle: get stronger on a handful of big compound lifts and let progressive overload drive the body-composition change. You train the main barbell and dumbbell lifts for several hard sets and add targeted accessory work, using double progression to keep the weights climbing over multi-week phases with deloads in between.
Progression and rep ranges
Work the main lifts in moderate rep ranges for a few hard sets and progress by double progression — clear the top of the range on a set, add weight, and build back up. Accessory work runs a little higher in reps. As with BLS, sets are taken near but not to failure, and small consistent weight increases are the goal.
Phases and deloads
The programme runs in multi-week phases, and between phases you take a reduced-volume deload. TLS scales its deload to roughly half the working reps (a lighter, shorter week) so you recover the fatigue without losing the weight you've built. It's paired with a flexible calories-and-macros nutrition approach.

FAQ
- How is TLS different from BLS?
They share the same philosophy — heavy compound lifting with progressive overload — but Thinner Leaner Stronger is written for women, with programming and nutrition guidance tuned accordingly. The training structure (hard compound sets + accessories, double progression, phases) is the same family.
- How do I progress?
Double progression: hit the top of a lift's rep range on a set, add a small amount of weight, and work back up from the bottom. Drop below the bottom of the range and you reduce.
- What does the deload look like?
A lighter week between phases at roughly half the working reps, weight preserved — enough to shed fatigue and come back fresh without detraining.
- Do I need a barbell?
The main lifts are best with a barbell, but dumbbell variations are used throughout, so it adapts to the equipment you have.
- Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes — it's designed to take a beginner through to the intermediate stage with simple, sustainable progression.
- Will lifting heavy make me bulky?
No — getting stronger on compound lifts while managing nutrition is what drives a leaner, more toned look; that's the whole premise of the programme.
- Do I need to warm up before the working sets?
Yes — the source prescribes a warm-up before your 3 hard working sets. Ramp up with a few light sets to your working weight (the app's guided warm-up can build this ramp for you); the sets shown in the app are the hard work sets, not the warm-up.
